New! 2-step verification2-step verification allows users to add an additional layer of protection to their Google Apps accounts. This feature is available for Google Apps for Business, for Education, and for Government versions and is coming soon to the free version of Google Apps. Infrastructure Security Google Apps is designed to provide you with a secure and reliable platform for your data, bringing you the latest technologies and some of the best practices in the industry for datacenter management, network application security, and data integrity. Three main components ensure the reliability of our security practices: - People – Google employs a full-time information security team including some of the world's foremost experts in information, application, and network security. This team is responsible for the company's perimeter defense systems, security review processes, and customized security infrastructure, as well as for developing, documenting, and implementing Google's security policies and standards.
- Process – Security is part of Google's DNA, built into each application from day one. Google applications go through multiple security reviews as part of the Secure Code development process. The application development environment is closely restricted and carefully monitored to maximize security. External security audits are also regularly conducted to provide additional assurance.
- Technology – To reduce exploit risks, each Google server is custom-built with only the necessary software components, and the homogeneous server architecture enables rapid updates and configuration changes across the entire network when necessary. Data is replicated in multiple data centers for redundancy and consistent availability.

Top ten advantages of Google's cloud Compared to on-premises, hosted and "software plus services" technologies, Google's multi-tenant, Internet-scale infrastructure offers faster access to innovation, superior reliability and security, and maximum economies of scale. Google has been pushing the technological bounds of cloud computing for more than ten years. Today, feedback and usage statistics from hundreds of millions of users in the real world help us bring stress-tested ... Expand innovation to business customers at an unprecedented pace. From our consumer user base, we quickly learn which new features would be useful in the business context, refine those features, and make them available to Google Apps customers with minimal delay.
The web is the epicenter of innovation, and Google's multi-tenant infrastructure is designed so we can push improvements to our entire customer base on short iteration cycles. We can deliver new functionality ... Expand on a weekly basis, or faster, because our systems are able to distribute updates so efficiently. In 2009 alone, we launched over 100 improvements, and customers didn't need to manage any upgrades or patches. In contrast, businesses tend to update traditional server software every five to seven years due to long release cycles from vendors and the cost and complexity businesses face implementing upgrades, especially when more powerful servers are required, like 64-bit hardware. Browser-based applications are another key ingredient in our recipe for rapid innovation. When we launch new features in our web applications, users automatically get these improvements just by refreshing their browsers. Our mobile browser applications also get new features without software updates. With traditional technology and "software plus services", client software is an innovation bottleneck. Even after back-end systems can support new features, users don't get new functionality in those environments until the software on their computers and mobile phones have been upgraded, which can be an expensive and labor-intensive project.
Rapid innovation powered by the cloud has another advantage over traditional technology cycles: employees adapt to a continuous stream of manageable improvements better than they tolerate large, disruptive ... Expand batches of change. Gradual iterations in bite-sized chunks substantially reduce change-management challenges. Conversely, employees are subjected to a painful re-learning cycle each time companies upgrade traditional software.
Web-based applications powered by Google's global infrastructure give workers full access to their information across devices, so they can be productive in more places. Their data is stored in the cloud - not on ... Expand one particular computer - so employees can connect with all of their information and get work done from any Internet connection. Google's infrastructure gives users seamless access to their information at work, at home, on the road and from their mobile devices. With traditional technology, important information can be trapped in software only available on a limited set of devices, preventing employees from being their most productive.
Because data in Google Apps is stored in the cloud instead of on employee computers, multiple users can access and contribute to projects simultaneously without worrying about using the same operating system, ... Expand software, or browser. For example, instead of collaborating on a document by sending back and forth revision after revision as attachments, documents are stored in the cloud with Google Apps. Coworkers can access the web-based document simultaneously in their browsers, and even make changes that other authorized users can see in real-time. Eliminating attachment round-trips by storing data in the cloud saves time and reduces frustrations for teams who need to work together efficiently.
Google's large investments in physical and process-based security are passed on to customers. First, Google is able to hire many of the worlds leading security experts to protect our systems and conduct ... Expand cutting-edge security research. Our data centers are hardened with many of the latest measures in security precautions, including biometric access controls and multi-tiered security perimeters. Furthermore, Google has implemented a multi-layered security process protocol designed to help keep customer data safe. Our processes have been independently verified in a successful third-party SAS 70 Type II audit to verify our confidentiality, integrity and availability of customer data. Finally, Google is able to efficiently manage security updates across our nearly homogeneous global cloud computing infrastructure, so customer aren't exposed to known vulnerabilities until they install security patches themselves.
Browser-based applications also help keep sensitive data more secure. Unlike traditional software, when a user is finished using a web-based application, minimal data is left on the machine that could be ... Expand compromised. Also, when employees can securely access their data from any browser, they're less likely to store data locally on unsecured end-points like thumb drives. In a world where one out of ten laptops go missing in the first year1 and 66% of workers report having lost a thumb drive2, making data securely available from the browser and minimizing the amount of sensitive data stored on devices is an effective security strategy.
Moving to Google's cloud doesn't mean you lose control of your data or your technology. The Google Apps Terms of Service explicitly state that customers retain ownership of their data in Google Apps, and ... Expand Google firmly believes that customers should be able to easily get their data out of Google Apps if they ever decide to stop using the service. Furthermore, Google Apps provides controls so administrators can manage which applications their users can access and how employees can use each service. Finally, Google Apps APIs allow administrators build custom functionality and integrations with other technologies.
Google buys raw computer parts in massive quantities, and assembles custom servers with few unnecessary components. Not only do we save costs on hardware, we also minimize overhead by consolidating ... Expand on a very small number of server configurations that can be managed in bulk globally at an extremely efficient ratio of staff to machines. On a per-user basis, these economies of scale allow Google Apps to operate at higher levels of efficiency than can be achieved by customers themselves. Further cost savings are also made possible by applications that run in the browser. Customers save time and money because there's no specialized software to license, patch and periodically replace.

Run your web apps on Google's infrastructure Easy to build, easy to maintain, easy to scaleGoogle App Engine enables you to build and host web apps on the same systems that power Google applications. App Engine offers fast development and deployment; simple administration, with no need to worry about hardware, patches or backups; and effortless scalability. Discover why developers are choosing App Engine. Google App Engine for Business makes it easy to build, manage, and scale your enterprise web apps. With Google App Engine for Business, you can build and run your company's internal web apps on the same scalable systems that power Google applications, with added features and support designed specifically for the enterprise. What Is Google App Engine?Google App Engine supports apps written in several programming languages. With App Engine's Java runtime environment, you can build your app using standard Java technologies, including the JVM, Java servlets, and the Java programming language—or any other language using a JVM-based interpreter or compiler, such as JavaScript or Ruby. App Engine also features a dedicated Python runtime environment, which includes a fast Python interpreter and the Python standard library. The Java and Python runtime environments are built to ensure that your application runs quickly, securely, and without interference from other apps on the system. With App Engine, you only pay for what you use. There are no set-up costs and no recurring fees. The resources your application uses, such as storage and bandwidth, are measured by the gigabyte, and billed at competitive rates. You control the maximum amounts of resources your app can consume, so it always stays within your budget. App Engine costs nothing to get started. All applications can use up to 500 MB of storage and enough CPU and bandwidth to support an efficient app serving around 5 million page views a month, absolutely free. When you enable billing for your application, your free limits are raised, and you only pay for resources you use above the free levels. App Engine has always made it easy to scale your apps. Now we’ve made it easy to securely scale the number of apps you own. The App Engine for Enterprise Administration Console lets you manage all the applications built by anyone in your company, not just the ones you’ve built. And you can use Access Control Lists to determine who has access to the application data, and who can deploy new code. Once more, all of your App Engine for Business applications are secure by default as users must have an account in your Google Apps domain to access them. App Engine for Business also simplifies the process of creating new applications associated with your domain. You don’t need to create DNS records for each application. You can simply create a subdomain to host all your applications, and they’ll automatically be at the address you specify. For example, a company might use *.apps.example.com for all of its App Engine apps. This feature gives all your new apps the credibility of an easy-to-remember URL on your company’s domain.
In today’s always-on world, businesses expect high availability and reliability, which can be difficult and costly to maintain with existing hosted systems. High reliability at a lower cost is one of the key benefits of moving applications to App Engine and we’re putting our money where our mouth is with a 99.9% Service Level Agreement. In addition, App Engine for Business customers get exclusive access to premium developer support, with guaranteed turnaround times and access to trained support engineers at Google. When you encounter a problem you can’t fix, you can sleep soundly knowing that you can reach someone to help you. See the App Engine for Business Support page for more details.
App Engine for Business makes it affordable to run your company’s applications in the cloud with simple pricing that doesn’t require quota management or over-provisioning. Each application costs $8 per user, up to a maximum of $1000, per month. For $8 per user, the application gets as much processing power as it needs for your intranet users in your Google Apps domain. Each application gets plenty of storage too, but you can also buy more to share across all your applications if you need it. At the end of the month, all of the bills for each application are combined together into a single bill for easy payment - no need to share a company card with the entire development team. And you only ever pay for what you use. You will also use App Engine for Business to run publicly accessible apps, such as your company's website or service. We’re still working out the details on pricing for that, so stay tuned.
App Engine is a rich platform which provides simple APIs to make use of Google’s many services. App Engine for Business applications can be based on standard Java or Python, and can take advantage of the same APIs as the rest of App Engine. But they also have access to a number of premium services available only to App Engine for Business applications. (Note: premium services, including SSL and SQL, may have an additional cost associated with them.) Hosted SQLWhile many applications can be built on the App Engine Datastore (which uses Google's BigTable database system), we know SQL is the industry standard for the enterprise, so we’ve got you covered. SQL database support on App Engine gives enterprise developers access to the full capabilities of a dedicated relational database, without the headache of managing it. Setup is just as easy as with an App Engine application, and the traditional configuration and maintenance work required to run a database server is taken care of for you. SSL on Your DomainApp Engine for Business allows you to use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) on your own domain for all your App Engine applications, not just on the *.appspot.com domain. SSL is a protocol that provides secure communications on the Internet. When used, communication between an employee’s browser and Google’s data centers is encrypted, providing a higher level of data security, particularly when applications are accessed over insecure Internet connections like public WiFi. With App Engine for Business, you gain the security of SSL with the trust of your company’s own domain name, like https://myapp.apps.example.com. Track our progress on all the features on the App Engine for Business roadmap. Note: The details and pricing outlined here are subject to change at any time without notice.
